Stair stringers are the structural backbone of every staircase, providing the critical support that holds treads and risers in place. Craftsman Stairs supplies quality stair stringers in timber, steel and other materials for residential and commercial projects across North Brisbane, Moreton Bay and the Sunshine Coast.
With over 20 years of staircase building experience, we understand the importance of using the right stringer type for your design, load requirements and aesthetic vision. Our stringers are precision-cut and manufactured to meet Australian Standards.
What Are Stair Stringers?
Stair stringers are the diagonal structural members that run along the sides of a staircase. They support the treads (the horizontal surfaces you step on) and risers (the vertical panels between each step). The number of stringers used depends on the width of the staircase and the weight it needs to support. Most staircases use two or three stringers for adequate support.
Types of Stair Stringers
Cut Stringers
Cut stringers (also called sawtooth stringers) have a zigzag profile cut into the timber, creating notches where the treads and risers sit. This is the most common type of stringer used in traditional staircase designs. The cut profile is typically visible on one or both sides of the staircase.
Open Stringers
Open stringers are visible on both sides of the staircase and are popular in contemporary and modern designs. They create a lighter, more open appearance and are often used in combination with open-tread or floating staircase designs.
Steel Stringers
Steel stringers offer exceptional strength and durability, making them ideal for industrial, commercial and modern residential staircases. We supply steel stringers in various profiles, including mono stringers (a single central support) for a striking contemporary look.
Closed Stringers
Closed stringers (also called housed stringers) have grooves routed into the timber to house the treads and risers. The stringer profile remains straight, giving a clean, enclosed look to the staircase sides.
