Spotted Gum is the best all-round timber for outdoor stairs in Brisbane — Class 1 durable, very hard and naturally resistant to rot and termites. Ironbark and Tallowwood suit fully exposed or coastal stairs, while Blackbutt gives a lighter look for covered, well-drained sites.
Hardwood also stays cooler underfoot than steel or concrete in the Queensland sun, grips well when finished with grooved or anti-slip treads, and suits both Queenslanders and modern homes.

South-East Queensland's combination of high UV exposure, heavy rainfall and humidity can be tough on outdoor structures. That's why we take durability seriously at every stage of construction. We use kiln-dried, seasoned hardwoods that resist warping and splitting. All fixings are marine-grade 316 stainless steel to prevent rust staining. And our multi-coat finishing system includes UV-stable exterior oils or coatings applied to all surfaces — including the undersides of treads and stringers.
We also design our external staircases with adequate drainage falls and ventilation gaps to prevent moisture build-up and extend the life of the timber. With a simple annual maintenance routine, your external timber staircase will look great and perform reliably for decades.

How Long Do External Timber Stairs Last?

5 / 10 / 15-year maintenance schedule
Re-oil annually with a marine-grade penetrating exterior oil. Check fixings, clear debris from treads, and re-seal exposed end grain.
Light sand and full re-oil every 18 months. Inspect stringer-to-bearer connections, replace any corroded fasteners with 316 stainless.
Full surface refresh: sand back, replace any individual treads showing movement, recoat with UV-stable pigmented oil for another decade of service.
Signs your external stairs need replacement
- Soft, spongy or visibly rotten timber in treads or stringers
- Stringer movement, twist or separation from bearers
- Rust staining from corroded fasteners (a sign of structural failure beneath)
- Splitting or checking deeper than 5mm along tread grain
- Loose or wobbling balustrades that fail a 1kN horizontal load test
- Treads cupping or holding water — fall hazard in wet weather
NCC 2022 Rules for External Stairs in Queensland
External stairs in Queensland must have risers of 115–190 mm, goings of 240–355 mm (with 2R+G between 550 and 700 mm), slip-resistant treads, and no opening that lets a 125 mm sphere through. Handrails & balustrade height
Balustrades are required where the drop exceeds 1 m: at least 865 mm above the nosings on the flight and 1,000 mm on landings and decks. Full details in our handrail requirements and balustrade regulations.
AS 4586 slip resistance
External treads must meet AS 4586 wet-slip classification (typically P4/P5). We use grooved nosings and textured exterior coatings — see our slip resistance guidelines.
QBCC-licensed builder (License 69007)
