Benefits of External Timber Stairs
Timber remains the preferred material for external staircases in Queensland for good reason. Natural hardwood offers exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, excellent slip resistance when properly finished, and a warm aesthetic that blends with both traditional and modern architecture.
Unlike steel or concrete, timber stays cooler underfoot in the harsh Brisbane sun — an important comfort factor for barefoot outdoor living. Hardwood species like Spotted Gum and Merbau also possess natural oils and tannins that resist decay and termite attack without the need for heavy chemical treatment.
When it comes to sustainability, responsibly sourced Australian hardwood is a renewable building material with a lower carbon footprint than steel or aluminium alternatives. We source our timber from certified suppliers wherever possible.
Choosing the Right External Staircase Style
The ideal external staircase design depends on several factors unique to your property:
Built to Last in Queensland's Climate
South-East Queensland's combination of high UV exposure, heavy rainfall and humidity can be tough on outdoor structures. That's why we take durability seriously at every stage of construction. We use kiln-dried, seasoned hardwoods that resist warping and splitting. All fixings are marine-grade 316 stainless steel to prevent rust staining. And our multi-coat finishing system includes UV-stable exterior oils or coatings applied to all surfaces — including the undersides of treads and stringers.
We also design our external staircases with adequate drainage falls and ventilation gaps to prevent moisture build-up and extend the life of the timber. With a simple annual maintenance routine, your external timber staircase will look great and perform reliably for decades.

Hardwood vs treated pine — long-term cost comparison
Australian Hardwood (Spotted Gum / Ironbark)
Higher upfront cost but a 25–40 year service life with annual oiling. Lower lifetime cost-per-year and stronger resale appeal for Brisbane and Sunshine Coast homes.
H3/H4 Treated Pine
Lower upfront cost but typically requires replacement at 10–15 years in SEQ conditions. Best for budget-driven projects or temporary access stairs.
How Long Do External Timber Stairs Last in South-East Queensland
A well-built external timber staircase in Brisbane or on the Sunshine Coast should last 25–40 years when the right species is matched to the right exposure and a simple maintenance routine is followed.
Lifespan by timber species
Hardest Australian hardwood. Excellent for coastal and high-traffic external stairs.
Our most popular external stair timber. Tough, beautiful and SEQ-proven.
Rich colour with excellent dimensional stability in changing humidity.
Lighter tone for modern designs; best kept above ground with good drainage.
Natural oils boost moisture resistance — a traditional QLD external stair choice.
Budget option; needs regular re-coating and is more prone to checking and movement.
5 / 10 / 15-year maintenance schedule
Re-oil annually with a marine-grade penetrating exterior oil. Check fixings, clear debris from treads, and re-seal exposed end grain.
Light sand and full re-oil every 18 months. Inspect stringer-to-bearer connections, replace any corroded fasteners with 316 stainless.
Full surface refresh: sand back, replace any individual treads showing movement, recoat with UV-stable pigmented oil for another decade of service.
Signs your external stairs need replacement
- Soft, spongy or visibly rotten timber in treads or stringers
- Stringer movement, twist or separation from bearers
- Rust staining from corroded fasteners (a sign of structural failure beneath)
- Splitting or checking deeper than 5mm along tread grain
- Loose or wobbling balustrades that fail a 1kN horizontal load test
- Treads cupping or holding water — fall hazard in wet weather
External Timber Stairs Compliance — NCC 2022 & QLD Requirements
Every external timber staircase we build is fully compliant with the National Construction Code (NCC) 2022 and the relevant Queensland regulations. Compliance isn't optional — it protects your family and your insurance position.
Stair geometry
Residential rise 115–190mm, going minimum 240mm, with consistent dimensions across the flight. See our full QLD stair regulations guide.
Handrails & balustrade height
Handrails required on any flight with two or more risers. Balustrade height 1,000mm minimum where the drop exceeds 1m. Full details in our handrail requirements and balustrade regulations.
AS 4586 slip resistance
