Types of Internal Timber Staircases We Build

Straight-Flight Stairs
The most cost-effective internal staircase. A single straight run with clean lines — ideal for open-plan homes with enough floor length.
L-Shaped (Quarter-Turn) Stairs
A 90° turn via a landing or winders. Makes efficient use of corners and adds a natural resting point.
U-Shaped (Half-Turn) Stairs
Two flights with a 180° turn at a landing. Common in two-storey homes where the full rise needs splitting.
Winder Stairs
Angled treads replace a flat landing so the stair turns in a tighter footprint — perfect for townhouses and compact homes.
Floating & Open-Riser Stairs
Treads cantilevered from the wall or carried on a concealed steel stringer. Light, modern and open to natural light.

Best Timber for Internal Stairs
Spotted Gum and Blackbutt are the best all-round timbers for internal stairs in Queensland — hard enough for busy family homes and easy to match to existing floors. Lighter or imported species suit specific interior styles.

Every internal staircase we build meets the National Construction Code 2022 Housing Provisions. The key dimensions are:
- Riser height: 115–190 mm, consistent within a flight
- Going (tread depth): 240–355 mm
- Stair formula: 2 × riser + going = 550–700 mm
- Balustrade height: 865 mm above nosings; 1,000 mm on landings
- Openings: no gap may pass a 125 mm sphere (including open risers)
- Flight length: maximum 18 risers before a landing
